NHS England
For Parents and Carers
There are over 50 specialisms to choose from, with options available to fit different interests. Some roles are patient-facing, some are based in the lab, and some incorporate physics, engineering and computing. Healthcare Scientists apply their scientific knowledge and skills to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases effectively. They play an essential role in driving innovation in healthcare.
A career in Healthcare Science can be dynamic, rewarding and varied. Alongside the broad range of specialisms, there are a variety of entry routes and training programmes, from Assistant to Consultant level. Apprenticeship, undergraduate, post-graduate and doctorate level training routes are available.
A career in Healthcare Science provides many opportunities for professional development and a clear pathway for progression. There are specialist clinical roles available, as well as opportunities in research, leadership and management, and education and training. This important workforce also benefits from security and longevity in their careers due to the high demand for scientific services in the NHS, and the key role they will play in delivering the NHS 10 Year Plan.
Those interested in a Healthcare Science career are encouraged to pursue early qualifications in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. This Springpod Virtual Work Experience Programme provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about Healthcare Science and would provide valuable evidence to support any applications to Healthcare Science roles or training programmes.
As a teacher, wondering how to help your students with their future can be challenging. With so many options available and ever-changing career and academic landscapes, it can be incredibly difficult to know where to start. One thing has remained constant—the importance of experience and the impact this can have on a student's decisions about their future.
The nature of work experience has also changed a lot in recent years. Students increasingly need opportunities that work for them; experiences that connect them with the right information, and employers, at the right time.
This is where Springpod’s experiences can have such a profound impact. From Virtual Work Experiences with top health and care organisations to Subject Spotlights with leading universities and world-class academics, students can build their experience and explore subject interests so they can make informed decisions about their next steps.
At Springpod, all experiences are self-led and flexible. They vary in length but can be completed at times that suit your students. Each experience comes with a certificate of completion, which is a great addition to CVs. Over 500,000 students are using Springpod to complete exciting experiences which build experience, develop skills, and strengthen future applications.
Springpod’s experiences usually take 2-8 hours to complete and are open to all students aged 13 and above. Completely free, they offer students an opportunity to connect with leading organisations to help them understand what opportunities exist.
As a teacher, it can be helpful to explain to students the benefits of work experience and the convenience of virtual work experiences with Springpod. Being able to fit the experiences around their lives rather than committing to a week allows them to see work experience in a different light—one that can really impact their future.
